How We Grade Military Surplus Gear (Condition, Wear, and What to Expect)

Military surplus does not follow new-retail condition standards. Production run, storage history, prior use, repairs, markings, and included components can vary, even within the same product title. Issued Supply grades are comparison tools; the selected variant and complete product listing remain the controlling record.

How to use a condition grade

Start with the grade, then review the listing-specific photography, included and excluded components, known defects, identifier evidence, inspection notes, and return eligibility. If a listing does not address a detail that matters to your intended use, contact us before ordering.

Condition overview

Excellent

Typically the cleanest available surplus option, with lighter visible wear. Excellent does not mean new or unused. Review the individual listing for any stated functional limitation, repair, marking, or missing component.

Good

Typically shows normal service or storage wear such as fading, scuffs, abrasion, softened fabric, or non-structural markings. The listing should identify known functional or structural limitations separately from cosmetic wear.

Fair

Typically shows pronounced wear and may include repairs, staining, abrasion, damaged hardware, or other cosmetic or functional limitations. Read every disclosure and confirm included components before ordering.

As-Is

May be incomplete, damaged, heavily worn, intended for repair or parts, or have unverified functionality. The individual listing controls return eligibility and should be reviewed carefully before purchase.

Cosmetic wear and functional condition are different

Fading, scuffs, markings, and softened fabric can be cosmetic. Tears in load-bearing material, failed stitching, cracked frames, broken hardware, or missing essential components can affect suitability. A condition word alone cannot establish whether an item is appropriate for a particular use.

Photography and item variation

Product photography may show the exact item or a representative example. The listing should state which applies. Surplus items within one grade can still differ in markings, shade, wear pattern, production details, and included components.
